Arran-Elderslie Driver Charged with Impaired After Near Collision With Police Vehicle
South Bruce OPP say a marked cruiser was nearly hit while blocking traffic on Highway 21, leading to multiple charges against an Arran-Elderslie driver.
A late-night call about downed wires in Kincardine Township nearly turned into something far more serious.
South Bruce OPP say officers were on Highway 21 around 11 p.m. on March 15, blocking traffic while responding to the hazard, when a vehicle approached and nearly struck a marked police cruiser with its emergency lights activated.
Police stopped the vehicle and say officers observed signs of impairment. The driver was arrested at the scene.
A 31-year-old Arran-Elderslie resident, William Harkness, has been charged with multiple offences under the Criminal Code, including impaired operation and dangerous driving, as well as a charge under the Cannabis Control Act related to having cannabis readily available in a vehicle.
No injuries were reported.
The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court in Walkerton on April 29.
Police say the vehicle was impounded for seven days, and the driver’s licence has been suspended for 90 days.
The incident comes as a reminder of the risks impaired driving poses not only to the public, but to emergency responders working roadside in already hazardous conditions.
