Feeling overwhelmed by the state of the world? You're not alone.
With constant news of global crises, social division, and environmental collapse, it’s easy to feel like nothing you do will ever be enough.
But change doesn’t always have to start big — or far away.
Sometimes, it begins by simply stepping outside and saying yes to free, everyday opportunities to connect with each other and with the natural world. We hope our Events Listings help bring up some of those moments (alongside plenty of great ticketed events, too).
You can also follow along with local groups and individuals who are quietly creating ways for people to come together. One of those is Owen Sound Sidewalk Astronomy, led by Steve Ritchie and AnnMarie Rowland.

I followed them on Facebook a while back and was delighted to see their open invitation to Hillcrest School on Saturday night, where anyone could drop by and view the Pink Moon through their (seriously awesome) telescopes.
In offering these open invites, Steve and AnnMarie aren’t just sharing their passion; they’re making space for awe, connection, and a renewed sense of belonging. Sometimes, all it takes is looking up.
And closer to street level, the Owen Sound & North Grey Union Public Library and The Ginger Press offered another kind of opportunity for connection this weekend with WordShop. It’s an annual gathering of writers and creatives of all kinds (including this one), where we come together to learn, collaborate, and spark new ideas.

Events like these remind us that community is built through shared stories, open doors, and open minds.
Joel Pennington’s new column is another great reminder that showing up in small, steady ways, right here in Owen Sound, can make a real difference. Whether it’s mentoring, sharing a meal, or checking in on a neighbour, how you show up in your corner of the world matters.
You Don't Have to Fix the Whole World. Just Show Up In Your Corner Of It.
There’s a lot of talk right now about how we raise youth, and specifically boys, in mainstream media. Adolescence was the most-watched show on Netflix recently. It’s a gripping and gritty fictional exploration of the fallout of a teen homicide in the UK, layered with commentary about social media, deeply ingrained misogyny, and youth culture today.
But, like all the macro-crises that plague us today, there are micro, local, tangible things you and I can do in Owen Sound.
